CEPGIST provides research, teaching and consulting to the community. It is structured into three R&D groups: WATERPROTECT - thermal water resources assessment and protection; DECASTONE - monument stone decay studies and geotechnical applications; ENVIGEO - environmental geochemistry.

CEPGIST also maintains a Museum of Mineralogy and Petrology, with an important collection associated with the mining activity, and an Earth Sciences Library, that offers a wide range of books and periodical publications to students and researchers.
